Visakhapatnam Airport is controlled by the Indian Navy, which carries out air traffic control support for both military and civil traffic. Prior to March,2012, only domestic flights were operated from Visakhapatnam. Air India commenced the first daily international Flight from Visakhapatnam to Dubai via Hyderabad from 25th March, 2012. One more International flight was made operational by Silk Air from Visakhapatnam to Singapore W.E.F 28th October 2012 on tri-weekly basis. The timings of the above two flights were as follows.
At present, only these three International flights are being operated from Visakhapatnam International Airport in addition to domestic flights being operated by various operators like Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet, Jet Airways. With 24X7 operation of the Airport from 01.01.2014 by the Navy, more Internationa / domestic flights are expected to commence their operations in near future.
The Airport Wing (Including AIU) of the Customs is functioning with 24 staff members in 2 batches. (6 Supdt. (cus), 12- P.O.s and 6 Hav/Sepoys ). The Main functions of the Customs staff at the International Airport are the clearance of international passengers and their baggage on Arrival and Departure, Detection and prevention of smuggling activities.
